A North London football team has received planning permission to develop a new stadium, which will also see the construction of 200 new homes and flats.

The London property development proposed by Tottenham Hotspur obtained planning permission from Haringey Council for a 56,250-seat stadium, which is expected to be completed in 2018.

Under Spurs' plans, some 56 one-bedroom flats, 49 three-bedroom homes and 39 four-bedroom houses along with a 24-hour supermarket, a 150-bedroom hotel and a public square and piazza would be constructed, but not all parts of the football giant's proposals were granted by the council's planning committee.

Leader of the council Claire Kober commented that the London property development "has the potential to make a huge impact, not just on the success of the football club, but also the whole of Tottenham - delivering job opportunities, regenerating the area and boosting the local economy".

There has also been talk of the club putting an offer in to becoming a tenant of the Olympic Stadium in Newham after the 2012 Games have finished, but this has been denounced by the Haringey Trade Unions Council as placing Tottenham's economy at risk, the Haringey Independent reported.
