Moving Home in London: Moving House Plants

Moving companies will transport house plants but will not guarantee their survival. A driver may refuse to load a plant if there is evidence of insect infestation, which may infest his van.

If you transport plants in your car, place them on the floor in the back of the car. Don't put them in the boot as any extreme temperature changes can be disastrous.

Water plants on the day before moving, and securely place them in a cardboard box. Line the box with a rubbish bag and then pack the box with newspaper to prevent shifting. Do not over water the plants before moving.

Tips on Moving Pets

Before moving your pet be sure that it is in good health. Arrange a veterinary examination to determine if anything is needed before you begin your move.

When travelling by car, use a proper pet carrier. Exercise a dog at rest breaks stops, but make sure that it is on a lead before you let it out of the car. If you must leave your pet in the car, do not park in hot sun and be absolutely sure to leave the windows open a few inches.

If you are planning to stay in hotels/motels during a long move, you should find out in advance if pets are welcome.

If you cannot take your pet with you, there are specialist pet transportation companies. No matter what method is chosen, special requirements must be considered. Vaccinations, pet passports and entry permits may be required.

Your pet can be transported by rail or air, but again, certain requirements must be met. Reservations must be made early and the appropriate and approved pet carrier used. Attach any instructions for the feeding, emergencies or protection if your pet is going to be out of your care and dependent on others. Make certain that owner name and address tags cannot be torn off or lost.

A lightly fed pet travels better so you may wish to regulate food and water before travelling.

If travelling with a cat, you may wish your vet to trim his claws, as a nervous cat may not only inflict damage to a stranger, but may also tear out a claw or two.

No matter what method of transportation is used, sedation may be required. Many vets will prescribe a mild tranquilliser for the trip. Be sure to follow recommendations and dosage requirements exactly.

Upon arrival, be as reassuring as possible and offer plenty of understanding and affection.
