Easy Fruity Flapjack Recipe

We recently hosted a week long bake sale that helped us raise over £150 for Comic Relief. It was great fun and everyone in the office took a turn to bring in baked goods. It turns out that many Paramount estate agents have a secret talent for baking, so we thought we would share some of our favourite recipes from the week.

First up we have Natalies Fruity Flapjacks. These are simple to make and are guaranteed to impress your colleagues if you dont eat them all at once yourself.

Prep: 10 mins

Cook: 25 mins

Ingredients

150g (5 oz) butter
75g (3 oz) dark brown soft sugar
75g (3 oz) dried fruit of choice (a good mix is 35g pumpkin seeds and 40g dried cranberries)
75g (3 oz) golden syrup or black treacle
225g (8 oz) porridge oats
Pinch of salt

To make these extra special you can add the peel of one orange into the mixture, and/or smooth melted dark or milk chocolate on top when the flapjacks have cooled.

Directions

Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 5.
Melt the butter, sugar and syrup or treacle in a saucepan, but be careful not to let it boil. Stir in the porridge oats and the salt and mix thoroughly.
Press the mixture into a 20cm (8 in) round baking tin and bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and mark into slices. Lift from the tin and leave to cool before cutting. Store in an airtight container.

Zumba® is a Latin inspired dance fitness class. It fuses fast tropical musical rhythms and easy to do moves to create a dynamic workout system in a safe, paced and effective format. The cardio, aerobic effect of Zumba relies on the fast steps, hip work and full body moves including lunges, level changes and vigorous upper body and arm movement.

Zumba Gold® follows the same formula as Zumba with modified moves and at a pace that suits the needs of active older adults or those just beginning their journey to a healthier lifestyle.

My Zumba fitness regime provides a total body workout with an interval training program to maximise calories burned. I incorporate a mixture of low, medium and high intensity cardio routines, for instance a high intensity samba routine is followed by a medium Cha Cha routine, and by doing so I alternate the level of intensities of the training session. Although Zumba is based on dance, you do not need a dance background to enjoy and benefit from Zumba training. My routines always have levels of challenges so that the participants stick to a level that works for their needs.

Zumba is Effective. Recent studies have shown that Zumba is a highly effective workout. Researchers found that participating in a single Zumba fitness class burned an average of 369 calories (range 300- 700). According to Dr. Porcari from ACE (American Council of Exercise), Zumba is also good for core strengthening and flexibility gains because there are lots of hip and midsection movements. In comparison with other exercises tested in the past Zumba burns more calories than cardio kickboxing, step aerobics and power yoga.

West Hampstead Nearly New Sale

A nearly new sale will be held in West Hampstead on Saturday 19 January.

Local resident Natasha wanted to shift clothes, toys and books in excellent condition that her children had grown out of. When she couldnt find one locally she approached the West Hampstead Community Association who recognised that this would be a great idea for the local community.

Natasha hopes that families in the area will be able to buy and sell a range of items, but will also take the opportunity to learn more about the community association and what it offers local residents.

Natasha explains that through flyering the last couple of weeks Ive had such positive feedback from local parents and it reinforces what Ive always thought; we live in a really special area where people want to meet their neighbours, and there is a really strong community spirit. Hopefully Saturday will go well and we can run the sale on a monthly basis.

On Tuesday 22^nd January our favourite local West Hampstead bookshop, West End Lane books, are hosting another evening of wine and books.

It is a great way to meet local people in a relaxed atmosphere. If you are not sure what book to read next I can guarantee there will be plenty of people who will provide you with a recommendation on the night!

On November 1^st 2012 three members of Paramount staff started growing a moustache to raise awareness and funds for Movember.

Each November Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of mens faces in the UK and around the world. The aim is to raise vital funds and awareness for mens health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Lets hear from Anthony and Nick about why they participate in Movember:

Anthony Shaw, Paramount Investments

I took part in Movember 2012 as I believe it to be an innovative and fun campaign which visually raises awareness of Mens health. I know that the money raised will genuinely make a difference to peoples lives; including helping fund survivorship initiatives for affected men and their families in addition to funding the research required to help improve diagnostic and prognostic tests/treatments. A very deserving cause!

Nick Christoforou, Paramount Investments

A good friend of mine Jay Hughes was unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year. Thankfully, following a successful chemo programme he is now back to his best!'

In total, a team of us Venture Inn Reigate have raised a grand total of £4,500 for the charity this year.

Movember is now a global movement, having expanded dramatically from its humble beginnings in Melbourne, Australia. It has inspired more than 1.9 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate across the globe. In 2011, over 854,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world got on board, raising GBP 79.3 million.

West Hampstead residents help keep London warm this winter

As many of you know, the Paramount office acted as a collection point for Hands on Londons second annual coat campaign.

For two weeks our office was open for donations, and we gave away West Hampstead goody bags as a thank you for every coat donated. We received far more donations than I anticipated, and the coats quickly took over the office!

It was really lovely to have a chat with everyone that took the time to drop off a coat. It is always nice to meet local people in the area and it was great to hear everyones enthusiasm for the collection. Your coats will be distributed to 80 different shelters and charities and will help protect many people from the cold as the temperature starts to drop.

On Friday Jit from Paramount Maintenance kindly took me (and the coats) to our drop-off point in Kings Cross. At one point I wasnt sure there would be any space for me in the car! In total we collected over 100 coats, which I think you will agree is a huge achievement. A massive thank you to the residents of West Hampstead for taking the time to clear out their closets and make their way down to our office to help a great charity out.

Last year Hands on London collected and delivered 2,800 coats to over 50 charities and shelters across Greater London, and this year they hope to collect even more. They hope to collect 10,000 coats in total which would be a massive achievement, and a huge step towards keeping London warm this winter.

Wrap Up London Charity Collection

Hands on Londons second annual coat collection campaign is now upon us. They are asking Londoners to clear out their cupboards and donate their old winter coats, which will be redistributed directly to the people who need them most.

Last year 2,800 coats were collected and then delivered to over 50 charities and shelters across Greater London, and this year they hope to collect even more.

Paramount Properties in West Hampstead will be a collection point for local residents to donate their coats. Please bring in any old winter coats before November 14^th to our office which can be found at 150 West End Lane, between the Thameslink and Underground stations.

As a thank you, everyone who donates a coat will receive a FREE West Hampstead goody bag.

After months of anticipation the inaugural West Hampstead Farmers Market was held on Saturday 22^nd September. The British weather was on its best behaviour as the sun shone down over the market and West Hampstead residents turned out in force to support the long-awaited market.

A few weeks ago West Hampstead received a new tourist attraction a large model cow. Hugely popular with children and adults alike, from our office window we saw many people posing next to it in some very funny photographs. This was just the start of creating hype for the market, something many West Hampstead residents have wanted for a number of years.

On the day a couple of us from Paramount were handing out our new eco-friendly cotton bags. It was the perfect time to hand them out as everybody needed something sturdy to carry their fresh fruit and vegetables back from the market in! As we stood there in the sunshine handing out bags, many familiar faces walked by and it was great to catch-up with local residents. We got talking to a lot of new people too, who were all really excited about the market.

We were standing by the market for over three hours and saw a number of people go by. There were families and young professionals, and a number of residents who have lived in the area for years who spoke passionately about how the area just keeps on improving. It was really great to hear and we came back to the office on such a high!

The Farmers Market will be back next Saturday and so will we we look forward to seeing you there!

West Hampstead Farmers' Market

West Hampstead residents may have noticed the areas latest tourist attraction a large cow that everybody seems to want a photo with. The mystery of the random farm animal is over though, as we learnt that the cow is gracing the forecourt of West Hampstead Thameslink station in preparation for the arrival of the West Hampstead Farmers Market.

Starting on the 22^nd September, a new farmers market selling fresh produce will grace the corner of Iverson Road and West End Lane. Ideally located opposite the Paramount office, we cant wait to simply cross the road for our lunch!

The London Farmers Market is a growing organisation that runs a number of markets across London. In their own words, they operate markets that enable farmers to sell their products to the public so that they get a fair price for their work.

Bradley Wiggins Wins 2012 Tour de France

Bradley Wiggins hit the headlines this weekend as he became the first British winner of the Tour de France. We dove a little deeper into the life of our new sporting superstar, and discovered that Wiggins once lived nearby...

Wiggins was born in Belgium in 1980, although his childhood was spent in Kilburn. Wiggins resided in Dibdin House, a block of flats built during the 1930s. Although not particularly academic, former teachers at St Augustines CE High School in Oxford Road remember his determination and passion for sport.

According to the Independent, they breed them tough in Kilburn. Tough and determined might be more accurate, as Wiggins commitment to his sport led to him cycling the 8 miles to Herne Hill velodrome for training on a regular basis. His journeys to and from the velodrome led to a couple of bad accidents, but his hard work has certainly paid off.

The Kilburn Times have reported that Labour Councillor Paul Dimoldenburg has called for Bradley Wiggins to be given the Freedom of Westminster following his Tour de France win.

Bradley Wiggins is the most fantastic sportsman and it all started in Kilburn [...] Bradley Wiggins is a great role model for young people and the council should award this honour in Olympic Year 2012.

And on that note, dont forget to support Bradley Wiggins this weekend, as he competes in the 250km Olympic road race on Saturday.

Is Katie Holmes looking for property in West Hampstead?

According to the front page of a national newspaper, Katie Holmes is looking at property for sale in London following her separation from Hollywood actor Tom Cruise. According to the article, our very own West Hampstead is an area she is considering.

Jester Festival 2012

This weekend we welcome back the Jester Festival! West Hampsteads annual answer to the village fête returns to Fortune Green for a weekend of fun and frolics, so if you live in the area it is definitely worth a visit.

There is plenty of fun to be had whatever your age, and children will love the circus school, puppet time and caricature workshops. There will also be balloon artists, face painting and magicians. For the adults there are some great prizes up for grabs in the silent auction, and the opportunity to meet your neighbours and feel part of the community.

The festival lasts the whole weekend in Fortune Green, kicking off on Saturday 30^th June.

Kilburn Film Festival 2012

Kilburn Film Festival celebrates its fifth birthday this month, and we are proud to be sponsoring and supporting their annual event. Between 28 June 8 July the festival will screen films from five continents, including from Nigeria, India, Ireland, Brazil, France, Senegal, Japan and Australia, plus classics and films by artists, older people and children. As well as the films there will be Q&As, discussions, refreshments and even live music at some events.

The festival kicks off with a free launch party on Thursday 28 June between 6:30pm 8:30pm. This will be a lively welcome with short film tasters from the festival, accompanied by drinks, snacks and music. The event takes place at South Kilburn Studios, a temporary space for creative start-up businesses, located on Canterbury Road.

Possibly the best venue of the festival is the Tin Tabernacle, which is a ship inside. On July 5 you can catch shorts by artists at the venue, accompanied by live accordion music. On July 7 it will continue the shorts programme with films from the UK, Brazil, Australia, Japan, Spain and Senegal, with a lively discussion to follow and Q&As with three directors.

At the Tricycle Cinema on July 7 the festival will be screening the award-winning Nigerian Nollywood film The Mirror Boy (2011). There will be a director/star Q&A and a screening of an Indian feature film (tba) on the same evening too.

On July 8 local filmmakers open the show with Movie Makers Brunch. This will be followed by the documentary Tim Robinson: Connemara with director Q&A, plus a screening of Cricklewood Craic about the Irish in Kilburn.

The festival will also be showing campaigning films from Kilburn Older Voices Exchange (KOVE) and Irish shorts for women only at the West Hampstead Womens Centre. With a huge amount of variety on offer we know you are going to find a film or two to see!

The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse at The Puppet Barge

Catch a show this bank holiday at the innovative Puppet Barge theatre in Little Venice. The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse is a lovely tale of two cousins who visit each other, experiencing exciting new sights and sounds. Suitable for ages 3-8, and an enjoyable afternoon for all.

Alice in Funderland at The Alice House, West Hampstead

Visit The Alice House on West End Lane on Sunday 3rd June for a comedy gig featuring Shazia Mirza, Ian Smith, Larry Dean and MC Gary Sansome. The fun starts at 8pm (doors 7:30pm) and tickets costs £5.

The Nomad Roaming Cinema, Queens Park

The pop-up travelling cinema visits Queens Park over the Jubilee weekend, with a free screening of modern British classic The Kings Speech on Saturday night. Screening starts at 9:30pm and attendance is free.

Keats Festival at Keats House, Hampstead

The annual Keats festival is back at Keats House in Hampstead for 10 days at the beginning of June. There is a full programme of activities and plenty of creative opportunities on offer for all ages. We particularly like the sound of Love Letters to London, where visitors can share their love for the capital. Camden Crawl Music Festival - Camden Town

The Camden Crawl has grown from a 5 venue and 20 artist affair to an event which included more than 50 venues and 250 artists and events in 2011. One ticket (available as a weekend pass or day ticket) is exchanged for a wristband at a main entrance point and allows unlimited access to all Crawl venues, outdoor arena, after show parties and daytime activities.

The 2012 Camden Crawl takes place at various venues from 4th 6th May 2012 and will feature more than 250 of next years brightest music talents from the UK and abroad across Camden Towns two mile stretch of historic pubs and venues.

The event kicks off with an opening night party featuring 6 live acts and a special edition of Club NME on Friday 4th May from 5pm at KOKO and runs from midday on Saturday 5th May until the early hours of the following bank holiday Monday.

Thames Water Hosepipe Ban in London

From midnight on 04 April 2012 a hosepipe ban has been imposed on Greater London and the South East of England. The past two winters have been especially dry, and groundwater levels are lower than they were during the last serious drought back in 1976.

"We have now received below-average rainfall across our region for 20 of the past 25 months, making it the driest two-year period since records began in 1884," Martin Baggs, chief executive of Thames Water.

The aim of the ban is to encourage people not to waste water. London councils, including Camden and Westminster websites have offered their own tips for water conservation and have teamed up with get composting to provide discounted discounted water butts.

Thames water provides a useful guide to how to save water in the home and are providing free water saving devices to all their customers. Devices include shower timers, a toilet flush bag filled with crystals that expands in your toilet cistern to save one litre of water per flush, tap and shower fitments and a 'Proud to be Dirty' car sticker!

London.gov.uk reports that during the 2006 drought, Londoners responded magnificently to the hosepipe ban and managed to cut their water use by eight per cent, showing that small actions can amount to significant savings.

Passion in the Square - 6 April - Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is hosting a special adaptation of a traditional Easter play on Good Friday with Passion in the Square, giving you the chance to reconnect with the story at the heart of the Christian festival. Over 70 actors are taking part in the event and the period costumes are bound to make a dramatic impact on the crowds who have gathered to watch the recreation of the Easter story.

2012 is set to be an adventurous year for Paramount. Some of the Paramount staff are doing a sponsored sky dive... oh yes, you heard correctly; 12 estate agents jumping out of a plane! We will be at the North London Skydiving Centre on the 17th June 2012 and will be jumping from 13,000 feet!

We aren't taking this lightly and are all feeling the fear... I approach the 17th June with trepidation as I suffer from a fear of heights this coupled with the notion of jumping out of a plane should be enough for our clients and customers to donate generously to this very worthy cause. West Hampstead library offers free loans on a huge selection of books, talking books, DVDs, CDs, and toys. Not only that, you can also call in to read magazines, papers and browse the internet.

As well as all of the above there are activities for children up to the age of 8 on most days of the week. Every Thursday between 11am and 11.30am and then again between 2pm and 2.30pm, you can bring your 0-18 month old baby to Baby Bounce where they can listen to rhymes and songs. On a Friday, West Hampstead library gears itself to entertain children between the ages of 2 and 7. From 10.30am 2-4 year olds can listen to stories and rhymes, and then at 4.15pm stories are read for 5 to 7 year olds.

If your children prefer to get their hands dirty, the Children's Craft Activity Hour on Tuesdays between 4pm and 5pm is the time for children ages 3-8. Younger children are also welcome with supervision from parents or guardians. You can call into the Library to see the children's art work brightening up the walls of the library and best of all, the activities above are completely free!

Residents can gain membership to West Hampstead library easily: all you have to do is bring proof of your name and current address. Children under the age of 18 also need to bring along a signature from a parent or guardian.

The opening hours for West Hampstead library are Monday and Tuesday 10am-7pm, Wednesday Closed, Thursday 10am-8pm, Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 11am-4pm.

Trooping The Colour For The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery

Every morning at 7am, the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery leaves their St. Johns Wood base for an hour and a half walk through the North West area of London as part of their strict daily routine. Each rider is in charge of three horses, riding one and leading two on either side by hand which makes for quite a sight to behold when they are seen riding down West End Lane in West Hampstead.

The King's Troop is a part of the Armys Household Troops and they are best known for their ceremonial gun displays at state occasions such as the Queens birthday, Royal Anniversaries and providing a gun carriage and black horses for state funeral processions, such as the funeral of the late Princess Diana.

The unit was originally named The Riding Troop of the Royal Horse Artillery but following a visit to the Troops base, King George VI amended the Troops visitors book by striking out the word Riding and inserting Kings. On her accession, Queen Elizabeth II declared that the Troops name would remain in honour of her father.

A typical day for the soldiers and horses starts at 6am mucking out the horses and at 7am they leave the base for the horses exercise. Upon their return the horses are fed and the soldiers are given their breakfast, before returning to the horses at 9:15am to give them hay, daily grooming and to sweep the stables. After their 12:30 lunch, the soldiers dedicate their time to cleaning their uniforms, whilst ensuring the horses are fed at 4:30pm and 6:30pm.

The Kings Troop men and women are all trained primarily as fighting soldiers. Up to six of these soldiers can be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan at any one time. Soldiers joining the Troop spend the first three to four years working as Mounted Gunners before they can be employed as saddlers, farriers, vehicle drivers, tailors, storemen or orderlies.

After 64 years at their St Johns Wood base, The Kings Troop are sadly moving 15 miles away to another base in Woolwich in 2012 after their lease with the Eyre Estate runs out. Due to increasing rent, they are no longer able to stay in the place where they originally formed. The familiar sound of the horses clip-clopping down the street will be sorely missed by residents who have grown used to hearing and seeing them walk by every day.

An Artistic & New Way To Finchley Road For Those In A Rush!

From now on if you're in a rush there is a short cut between West End Lane and Finchley Road. The little noticed lane has always been there strarted on West End Lane between the Bridge Cafe and West End Lane Cars, however it was badly lit with rubbish strewn everywhere and the fence that separates the lane from the railway line was in very bad repair, so not somewhere you would fancy walking at any time of day.

In order to make this lane more appealing it has been renamed Billy Fury Way. The fence has been fixed, the rubbish gone and the lighting increased. Not only that, there is a superb graffiti mural of the 1960's Rock and Roll sensation Billy Fury, a tribute to this particular star has been chosen because he recorded most of his hits in the Decca Studios which were situated on our nearby Broadhurst Gardens. The Decca Studios were home to many popular songs and albums until 2009 when it become the Lilian Baylis House and is currently used as rehearsal space by the English National Opera.

There are plans for more music star murals to be added along the whole length of Billy Fury Way which we will look out for and let you know whose images have been selected!

The Cricklewood Improvement Programme Launches This Week

Back in October 2010, the community of Cricklewood organised a walkabout around the area with councillors from the three boroughs, Barnet, Brent and Camden, in an attempt to set the wheels in motion towards improving the current area. Since then, they have come on in leaps and bounds.

On Tuesday 19th July 2011, Cricklewood Improvement Programme launched their welcome event at The Crown Hotel, Crickewood.

This programme was created in 2010 by Cricklewood Homeless Concern in partnership with local residents. Their aim was to encourage local people in the area to help make Cricklewood a great place to live and work.

The reason for their launch meeting on Tuesday was to collaborate all the local residents and businesses, along with local police, councillors and members of the local church to start communicating with each other about the future of the area.

Their vision for this programme has been defined as: To make Cricklewood a safe, healthy, tidy and desirable neighbourhood whose development is driven by residents in collaboration with councils and other relevant organisations

As Cricklewood is situated between three London Boroughs and covers three different councils, there is a challenge involved in putting forward their ideas and getting these actioned but with the help and motivation of the local residents and businesses, they are determined to restore pride in the area by making it a desirable place to shop, work and live.

World Flavours Market Comes To Willesden Green This Weekend

The market will set up for 10am outside of Willesden Green Library, 95 High Road, Willesden and be there until 5pm. The stalls will range in both culture and trade, offering food & drink, fashion & accessories and arts & crafts from various cultures. This cosmopolitan mix has been created to represent different cultures and highlight the wide variety of things available in North London.

This event is part of The Greenhouse @ Willesden Programme which gives anyone in the area the opportunity to showcase something special from events like this to a special talent. Our Very Own Gladstonbury Festival In Dollis Hill

There is no need to travel miles and tramp though fields of mud in order to take part in a great festival this summer.

On Sunday the 19th June, which is Fathers Day so if you're looking to treat you dad, why not head to Gladstone Park in Dollis Hill between 12pm and 6pm for the Gladstonbury Festival.

There is plenty of music and entertainment to suit all tastes. Some of the music on the main stage, which has proved very popular in the previous years, will be from The Future Shape of Sound, who are renowned for their retro sound and putting on a great live show. The Penny Black Remedy who are a London based band who play a mix of country and punk music. If you prefer to entertain rather than be entertained there will also be an Open Mic set, further details of this can be found at www.gladstonepark.org.uk.

As well as music there will be live chainsaw tree sculpture demonstrations from The Tree Pirates, Mr Alexander performing magic and juggling and Irvin's Funfair. Even your pets have not been forgotten... you can enter your dog into the Woofstock dog show!

If you fancy learning a new skill there will be demonstrations from Artist Blacksmith Toby Petersen, Kilburn Comos are running Rugby games for kids, Roller Dome are offering a introduction to roller skating and in the kids craft tent there will be a sewing workshop and Fathers Day card making.

So pop along to this free event, you'll just need some cash for all the delicious food available and the craft stalls with all sorts of wonderful handmade goods such as glassware, cards, jewellery and wood sculptures.

A New Farmer's Market in St Johns Wood

As of Saturday 14th May 2011 there has been a new Farmer's Market in town. It is based at F, NW8 and open every Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

The aim of this Farmers Market is to provide local residents with the opportunity to purchase fresh and exotic produce on a Saturday. Currently the farmers markets are only open Monday to Friday leaving the weekend with the dread of visiting a busy supermarket.

They are aiming to have approximately 25 stalls selling various different foods which will hopefully entice local residents to not only pick up their usual fruit and veg but also to try other different types of food. Some Things To Do With Your Children Over The Easter Holidays

As Easter is nearly here, how about an Easter Egg Trail? Cadbury's is supporting the Easter Egg Hunt taking place at Fenton House in Hampstead Village over four days from Good Friday to Easter Monday. You must follow the trail and find the hidden pictures of eggs in the gardens to win a chocolate egg. Starting time is 11am and the site closes at 5pm. The price is £2.50 per child and accompanying adults have free admission to the garden. As well as the trail there will be a face painter to keep the kids entertained.

Fenton House is also known for the collection of keyboard instruments, porcelain and paintings added to this luxury home by Lady Katherine Binning who bought it in 1939. Admission prices into Fenton House are: Adults £6.50, Child £3, Family £16. Garden only: adult £2. Gardens season ticket: adult £10 and of course National Trust members get in for free. There are many events for families happening locally for the kids over the Easter Break. For those children with dramatic interests there is a course including a mini performance of Wind in the Willows. The Harlesden Gallery Group Exhibition currently showing at The Tricycle Gallery

The Tricycle Gallery at the Tricycle Theatre is currently presenting a collaborative show with the Harlesden Gallery. The Harlesden Gallery is a group of both highly established and emerging artists including various painters, illustrators and printmakers who all work within the Brent area. The aim of the exhibition is to give audiences an insight into this forward thinking collective. Developed through the Harlesden Town Charter Regeneration Programme, the focus of the group has been to bring more attention to the creative activities of the area and broaden public awareness of the diversity of artistic practice taking place in Brent. This show will run at the Tricycle Gallery until 10th April.

Also of interest at the Tricycle Gallery, you can see the Artistic works of the current artist in residence, Natalie Ryde. Her most recent works have biological and botanical themes and aspects. Exploring the uncontrollable force of nature, human experience and opposing worlds as well as human organs, which are alluded through creating ambiguous shapes.

The Gallery at the Tricycle Theatre also holds a young artist group of which Natalie Ryde mentors several group. There ia also an adult life drawing classes with tuition which is held on a Thursday from 2.30pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. Prices are £7/£6 concessions or £4 for A-Level students in who are enrolled at Brent Schools.

Graffiti Artist bring Foxes to West End Lane

Foxes used to be seen only in the countryside but in recent years, they have been spotted regularly in West Hampstead and surrounding areas. One artist has decided to expand on this idea of spotting the local foxes and created them in the form of a stencil drawing.

These stencils appear in different colours, such as pink, black and white and have been spotted on walls, phone boxes and shops. They have even managed to appear at our local Tescos.

Normally graffiti is frowned upon but local residents seem to have supported these images and find them rather amusing.

The artist has not yet identified themselves but we are intrigued as to whether this will be the only urban animal that appears in our local area or whether there is more to come.

Mini Marathon opportunity this weekend!

A mini marathon is taking place this Sunday 13th February for young runners from the Brent area. Anyone aged 11 to 17 years old is invited to take part!

The starting point will be the Willesden Sports Centre in Donnington Road, Willesden. Entrants must register between 9.30am and 10.30am on the day of the race. The race will start at 11am.

The first runners to complete this trial race will get a chance to become part of Team Brent and will qualify for a place in the Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon on April 17th! These runners will run the last 3 miles of the London Marathon from London's Old Billingsgate, to the same finishing line in The Mall. Have you ever wanted to report a problem in your area but don't know who to contact? Have you spent ages on the phone trying to speak to someone at your local council? If so, this website is for you.

The charity mysociety.org in conjunction with Young Foundation launched fixmystreet.com in 2007 and provides residents with a quick and easy way of reporting things in their area that are broken, dirty, damaged, dumped, needs fixing, cleaning or clearing.

To use the site, all you just need to enter your postcode or location, and then you can view problems already reported in your area, or report your own by clicking your location on the map provided.

All reported problem will be sent to the relevant council by email. The council can then resolve the problem through their normal procedure. Local residents are also able to discuss the problem with others on the website by providing an update.

Cricklewood Improvement Programme

This event was organised by the Cricklewood Improvement Programme which is made up of local residents groups, businesses and charities. Their aim is to ensure that the three councils listen to the community and provide a safe and prospering area that the residents can be proud of.

This programme will continue to take over the next five years and consist of reviewing the current plans for Cricklewood's development by the three councils, conducting surveys with the residents and businesses in order to establish community's needs and to recruit new supporters for this programme.

A website, www.cricklewoodcan.org was created in late December by the members in order to raise the profile of this programme but is currently still in the design stages.

We look forward to following their progress throughout the following years.

Willesden Green library to undergo major redevelopment

If the redevelopment goes ahead it will mean much greater facilities for the whole of the South Brent borough. The new library would continue to provide all the services available now such as the loaning of books, book launches, art workshops and information seminars. As well as this the new library could offer shopping, housing and meeting rooms, if private funding is found.

There is an 'Expression of Interest' forum that Brent council are using from until July this year to let the local community have their say about what they would like the new library to offer. This will be used to select ideas, offers and programmes which could be showcased at Willesden Green library.

In order to have your say please visit the borough of Brent website www.brent.gov.uk and complete a customer questionnaire and Expression of Interest form.

New Sainsburys on West End Lane!

Back in September we reported on the pending application of retail giant Sainsburys and their bid to open in place of closed down mini market 'Best One' on West End Lane. Opinions were mixed and it was not certain whether this would be good for the local shops and surrounding businesses.

According to local shop owners on West End Lane, their reports had shown that sales had gone down by as much as 50% since Tesco's opened and they are worried that if a Sainsbury's opens then they may end up losing business and possibly closing due to the competition from both stores. However, the opinion recently from the locals who shop in West Hampstead is that a large amount of people currently shop at Tesco's. Therefore it could possibly be the Tesco trade that is likely to decrease and not the trade at local specialised shops.

Although many people enjoy the idea of shopping in a franchise store or independent shop because of the personal service they get, the reality is that in recent years many more people have chosen to shop in chain stores. This is because of the cheaper price of the produce and the convenience. For those who work in West Hampstead broadening the choice of where to purchase lunch is very much welcomed! The new Sainsbury's will be opening in February and we are looking forward to having more choice, trying something new and tasting the difference!

The Dell was originally a neglected park in Hoveden Road but in 2005 was renovated by The Dell Trust with the help from the locals to very special landscaped gardens and is now currently known as the "people's park".

Since the park has been transformed, there have been many events that have taken place and continue to be enjoyed by all the residents.

This year the trust have upgraded the childrens play area and a secluded area for teenagers and on Monday 20th December, there will be Carol Singing between 6pm and 8pm from 6.30pm.

The Bowling Green Pavilions new nursery

Back in January 2010, there was a planning application received by Brent Council for the erection of a single-storey building for use as a nursery school on the Bowling Green Pavilions located in Chatsworth Road, NW2.

On the 19th October 2010, the application was granted by Brent Council as there was a need in the community for more child care provisions.

The nursery that put forward this application and will be looking to relocate in the future is Crickets Montessori Nursery School currently located in South Hampstead Cricket Club in Brondesbury Park.

This nursery is currently owned by a private owner. It first opened back in 2004 and is registered for 30 children from two to five years. This relocation would allow the nursery attendance to expand to approximately 45 children.

It opens Monday to Friday from 9am to 3.10pm with the exception of closing at midday on Wednesday. The provision is registered on the Early Years register and the compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare register.

Ofsted inspected this school in 2009 and found that the staff work well together, the children are very happy and settled in the nursery. The nursery is well equipped, the children have good opportunities to develop their creativity, play outdoors and learn the importance of healthy eating.

Having recently spoken to Brent Council, the works have not begun yet but we are anticipating the arrival of this hopefully in the coming year.

Farmers Markets in North West London

North West London is bursting at the seams with Christmas Farmers Markets in Finchley, Swiss Cottage and Queens Park offering a refreshing alternative to high street shopping! They are a perfect opportunity to stock up before Christmas and enjoy a morning shopping and sampling produce. Generally at all Farmers Markets the Beef, Lamb and Pork comes from high welfare farms - keep a look out for rare breeds! London property prices rise on the Jubilee Line

Property prices are now above their peaks of September 2007 in 22 of the capital's 154 postcodes according to a London property price survey conducted by UK property website, Zoopla.

Property prices on the "Jubilee line corridor" of north west London have recovered faster since the crash than in any other part of London, according to research. from Zoopla. St John's Wood NW8 tops the list of London postcodes where property prices have now passed their 2007 peaks. Of the top 12 London postcodes, five property price hot spots are on the Jubilee line which runs through North West London to the West End, The City and Docklands.- St John's Wood; NW2 (served by Dollis Hill and Neasden stations), NW3 (Swiss Cottage), NW6 (Kilburn and West Hampstead), and NW10 (Willesden Green).

London property prices fell 20 per cent or more in the wake of the credit crunch yet the average St John's Wood property is valued at £888,840, almost seven per cent above property prices in September 2007, according to the house price survey.

Swiss cottage Community Centre hosts 'Popdance', a great dance class specially designed for adults on Monday's at 11am. The class was created to combine a fun filled dance class where adults of all ages and abilities can learn dance routines to pop music, allowing you to let loose from the stresses of life and have some fun. Popdance classes are held all over the country and are launching in our very own Swiss Cottage on 3rd November.

Go green Camden increasing number of green roofs by 2012

NW6 is set to be a part of Mayor Boris Johnson's Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. We are joined by other London Borough's including the majority of Westminster and the inner parts of Camden, Southwark and Kensington and Chelsea - all of which have been required to build a new green roof. This does not only support the worlds 'go green' campaign but may also reduce fuel bills by providing effective heat insulation on the roof and possibility minimising sound.

There has already been two of these new roofs installed at the Webheath estate in Hampstead in 2009 and more in line to join Boris's Strategy. The London Borough of Camden has endeavored to substantially increase the existing number by 2012.

South Hampstead's current contribution to this scheme is already in progress on Rowley Lane. Many other similar schemes are already in early stages through out the borough.

Camden's 'Environmental Sustainability Delivery Plan' which commits to protect the environment and develop a more sustainable future for the borough. They promise to strive to help residents and businesses alike do what they can to reduce environmentally harmful actions and contribute to the scheme.

These steps do not only just support the worlds 'go green' campaign and the 'World Green Roof Congress' but may also reduce fuel bills by providing effective heat insulation on the roof and possibility minimising sound. The new roofs can also act as a coolant in the hot weather possibly making air-conditioning bills lower.

Belsize Park opens the doors to its new Post Office!

After six years of campaigning...A new Post Office has opened in Belsize Park! The champagne was flowing as Locals celebrated the opening.

After the closure of Haverstock Hill, Belsize Village and Englands Lane Post Offices, the accessibility of a nearby Post Office has effected many residents. Locals are being encouraged to show their support as it is only open for a trial period and Camden Council has funded the start up costs for the of around £7,200.

Residents are confident that there is, and will continue to be, a sufficient demand for service and that the Post Office will be a huge success. The late night counter service "Essentials" is open from 7am until 11pm in Budgens Supermarket on Haverstock Hill. Customers will be able to access a range of different services including travel services, government services, bill payments, banking and mailing.

West Hampstead Thameslink Station is being given a make over!

Preparatory work has started in building a new West Hampstead Thameslink station and revival of the surrounding area, in a project which is part of Camden Councils "Place Shaping Strategy". The strategy involves making significant improvements in order to make West Hampstead a more pleasant and enjoyable place to live, work and visit. The building of a new station and associated improvements are funded jointly by the council and Network Rail as part of its £5.5bn Thameslink program, the aim of which is to massively increase the capacity of passengers on north-south services through London, and to improve the interchanges within the West Hampstead Underground and Overground stations and ease congestion across routes.

Network Rail say that after improvements the station will be a brighter and safer place, more equipped to handle the extra passengers. The station itself will be built with a "living roof" living as it will be planted with flowering sedum plants, making the view from surrounding offices and residential premises attractive and visually appealing.

On Iverson Road the pedestrian crossing will be improved to make it easier for people to cross the street, and the pavements are being widened for safety and extra space for pedestrians. The space along the footpaths will be landscaped into a tree-lined walkway, as well as new cycle racks which will be incorporated making the area more pleasant and in keeping with the new "green" station.

More passengers are expected to travel in the Thameslink as new longer trains are introduced in 2015, changing them from 8 carriages to 12. A new foot bridge will be installed in preperation, allowing easier access to all platforms. The platforms at the Thameslink station are being extended and should complete by the end of 2010, beginning of 2011.

For the theatre lovers out there...

At the Tricycle Theatre this evening you can see Arthur Miller's 'Broken Glass'. Set in the 1930's, Jewish couple Phillip Gellburg and his Wife Sylvia take us through their journey during the lead up to and the begining of World War II. The story takes the audience through their tragedy, fear, passion and guilt. Miller was awarded a Laurence Olivier award for this play in 1995.

The show starts at 8pm and tickets are available for tonight at £18 - however the show is running until Saturday 27th November. Prices vary depending on what time and day you want to go. They can be found at 269 Kilburn High Road, Kilburn, NW6 7JR.

For those who love the funny side of things...

Will retail giant Sainsburys take the place of the closed down mini market on West End Lane?

This is a question which has become significant in the last few weeks, and a lot of people would like to know the answer too. There has recently been an application for a licence made by Sainsbury's to Camden Council, which, if it is successful, will mean that they could open a store at 204 West End Lane, West Hampstead, in the place of closed down store "best-one".

To many who live in West Hampstead, the mini market "Best-One" which was open 24 hours was an iconic feature of quirky West Hampstead. It made up part of the character of West End Lane, as well as the other many independent shops. However although people may enjoy this ideal, the reality is that in recent years many more people have chosen to shop in a chain store, over shopping in a franchise independent store.

Some shop owners down West End Lane report that sales have gone down by as much as 50% since Tesco's opened, and are worried that if a Sainsbury's opens there then they may end up closing due to the competition from both stores. The decision has not yet been made, and we are looking forward to finding out what the store will become.

We all know how important it is for children to learn at least the basic English and Maths skills at a young age, for their development, and to enable them to prosper in these areas in adult life. "Teachus Homework Club" in Willesden, aims to provide essential extra supplement for English and Maths for children who are being educated in Key stage 1, 2 and 3. Homework clubs have been proven to show an improvement to children's grades at school, as they can provide the extra help they may require out of school hours.

The teachers who run the homework club are all from exceptional teaching backgrounds and are all graduates from the top-ten universities across the UK. The teachers aim to focus on educating children at their own ability level, and to give them extra exam practice, ensuring students are tested every 8-10 weeks so that teachers are able to track their progress. The cost per hour for tuition is only £4, and this is paid at the beginning of each lesson. "Teachus Homework Club" takes place every Monday and Thursday throughout the year, in term time only, at The Willesden Green Library Centre, 95 High Road, Willesden.

Ballet takes on Queens Park

From the 15th September to the 8th December 2010 there will be 12x 1 hour Ballet lessons taking place on a Wednesday evening. This is great for adults and who are interested in starting ballet up to intermediate level skills in ballet.

The 6.30-7.30pm session is only for adults who have either no experience or little experience in Ballet and wish to start anew. The 7.30-8.30pm is for adults who have already completed their level 1 and are ready to move on away from the basics of Ballet. Towards the end of the course a short choreographed dance is worked on learning how to dance together as a group.

Stage terminologies are also practiced towards the end of each course. The lessons will take place upstairs, at The Corrib Rest, 76-80 Salusbury Rd, Queens Park, London, NW6 6PA.

Hampstead and Highgate Literary Festival 2010

There are three full days of events and workshops featuring over 70 authors. The Hampstead and Highgate Literary Festival promises a diverse, jam-packed three days of sessions seeing Lynda Bellingham discussing her biography, to Steven Berkoff taking to Trudy Gold about his memoirs, a fiction workshop hosted by Jane Rusbridge and a seminar from Fiona Kirk about diet, nutrition and healthy eating - making it simple!

This is a fantastic chance to get your reading glasses out and set stuck into a fantastic memorandum of events. Some of them take you on walks over Hampstead, giving you a deeper insight to the development of Hampstead and its construction and design over the years. North West London has an amazing architectural history and during this festival you can meet some of the makers of this stunning area.

All events are at Ivy House, 94-96 North End Road, London, NW11 7SX. There are also refreshments here. You can get to Ivy House on the Northern Line (London Underground) to Golders Green and take a 10 minute walk along North End Road. There are two buses that can take you from the station to Ivory House which are the 268 or 210 routes.
